The SHDF Mission is to financially assist meritorious and needy students in
selected parts of India to improve their access to higher professional
education, and thereby help them grow to their full potential.
In this effort, SHDF pays special attention to:
those affected by natural calamities and social upheavals. For
example, SHDF supported the professional education of several financially crippled
students in Gujarat, which suffered a devastating earthquake on January 26,
2001; and gender equity. It is only through education that women can overcome
the stereotypes, bias, and prejudice that are prevalent in our society in India.
SHDF is determined to give women a chance to realize their full potential
and contribute to the advancement of their families, communities and the
country.
The term 'professional education' includes various disciplines and
specializations in the field of medicine, engineering, agriculture and
information technology; it also includes disciplines like journalism,
nursing, home science, business administration, architecture and
accountancy.
